APT Membership

Founded in 1968 as a joint venture among Canadian and United States preservationists, APT now has members in more than 30 countries.


Membership in APT demonstrates your commitment to the conservation field, and we would be very pleased to have you join our organization. Membership flyers: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish.


APT has membership categories for individuals (including students, emerging professionals, and retirees), companies, government agencies, and nonprofits. We also offer an institutional rate for libraries or other entities that only need to access APT's publications. Learn more about the member benefits of the different categories below.


Do you live in one of the countries listed as Low Income, Lower-Middle, or Upper-Middle Income in the World Bank's classification of countries? If so, please be sure to review our discounted Global Membership Program.


APT's membership year runs July 1-June 30 annually. Pro-rated dues are available for those who join during the year.

The membership year runs July 1-June 30 each year, and members will receive an email about renewing their memberships at the beginning of June.

  • Individual Membership

    Individual members ($210 annually) represent a wide range of practioners, including preservationists, architects, engineers, conservators, consultants, contractors, craftspersons, curators, developers, educators, historians, landscape architects, students, technicians, and other persons directly involved in the application of methods and materials to maintain, conserve, and protect historic structures and sites for future use and appreciation.  


    Benefits include:

    • Subscription to the APT Bulletin, the peer-reviewed journal that is the ultimate source for cutting-edge preservation techniques.
    • Subscription to the Communiqué, our electronic newsletter.
    • Weekly emails with program information, timely news, and Chapter news.
    • Discounted rates to attend APT annual conferences, held in cities across North America.
    • Discounted rates for webinars and workshops.
    • Listing in, and access to, the APT online membership directory 
    • Online access to past issues of the APT Bulletin via JSTOR, a digital archive that enables APT members to search, browse, download, and print full-text PDF versions of articles.

  • Student Membership

    Student Membership ($70 annually) is designed for people who are part of an undergraduate, graduate, or traditional trades training program.


    As a student member of APT, you will reap all the benefits of an Individual APT membership at a greatly reduced rate that is friendlier to your budget.


    Benefits include:

    • Subscription to the APT Bulletin, the peer-reviewed journal that is the ultimate source for cutting-edge preservation techniques.
    • Subscription to the Communiqué, our electronic newsletter.
    • Eligibility for student conference scholarships. 
    • Discounted rates to attend APT annual conferences, held in cities across North America.
    • Listing in, and access to, the APT online membership directory 
    • Online access to past issues of the Bulletin via JSTOR, a digital archive that enables APT members to search, browse, download, and print full-text PDF versions of articles.
    • Eligibility to vote in the annual Board of Directors election.
    • Thanks to support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Student members can attend any of APT's virtual programs at no cost in 2026.

  • Emerging Professional Memberships

    APT offers four tiers of membership for Emerging Professionals. 


    This membership type is designed for people within four years of entering the preservation field from a college, university, or trade apprenticeship program. Dues are $100 in the first year and increasing by $20 per year thereafter. After four years, renewing members select another Membership category such as Individual.


    Each tier enjoys all of the benefits of the Individual member at a reduced rate.

  • Retired Membership

    Retired Membership ($150 annually) is designed for persons 62 years or older and no longer working full time. 


    They enjoy all of the same benefits as Individual membership at a reduced rate.

  • Corporate Membership

    APT offers four tiers of corporate membership based on how many individuals the company would like linked to the account (ranging from 3-15). These membership levels are intended for for-profit companies working in fields related to preservation and heritage conservation.


    Benefits include:

    • One copy of the APT Bulletin mailed to the office. The APT Bulletin is a peer-reviewed journal that is the ultimate source for cutting-edge preservation techniques.
    • All corporate-linked members have online access to digital issues of the APT Bulletin via JSTOR, a digital archive that enables APT members to search, browse, download, and print full-text PDF versions of articles. 
    • Access to Communiqué, our quarterly electronic newsletter, through the member portal.
    • Weekly emails with program information, timely news, and Chapter news.
    • Discounted registration for APT annual conferences, held in cities across North America.
    • Specialized training and education opportunities, with discounted member rates.
    • Listing in, and access to, the APT online membership directory through the member portal.
    • Being part of an international network of leading preservation practitioners.
    • Eligibility to join a community of peers through one of APT's many committees, including six technical committees.  
    • Linked employees are eligiblefor the Recognized Professional Program.
    • Linked employees are eligible to run for and vote in Board elections.

  • Government & Nonprofit Membership

    APT offers three tiers of membership for government agencies and nonprofits, based on the size of the agency or organization and how many people they would like linked to the account, ranging from one to twenty-five.


    Benefits include:

    • One copy of the APT Bulletin mailed to the office. The APT Bulletin is a peer-reviewed journal that is the ultimate source for cutting-edge preservation techniques.
    • All linked members have online access to digital issues of the APT Bulletin via JSTOR, a digital archive that enables APT members to search, browse, download, and print full-text PDF versions of articles. 
    • Access to Communiqué, our quarterly electronic newsletter, through the member portal.
    • Weekly emails with program information, timely news, and Chapter news.
    • Discounted registration for APT annual conferences, held in cities across North America.
    • Specialized training and education opportunities, with discounted member rates.

  • Institution Membership

    APT offers a specialized membership level for libraries or other institutions who are primarily interested in receiving the publications-related benefits of APT. The rate for this is $350 a year.


    Benefits include: 

    • One copy of the APT Bulletin mailed to the library or institution. The APT Bulletin is a peer-reviewed journal that is the ultimate source for cutting-edge preservation techniques.
    • Institutional members have online access to digital issues of the APT Bulletin via JSTOR, a digital archive that enables APT members to search, browse, download, and print full-text PDF versions of articles. 
    • Access to Communiqué, our quarterly electronic newsletter.
    • Listing of institutional name in the membership directory.
    • Discounts on publications.

    Many libraries and research institutions subscribe via a service such as EBSCO, Harrassowitz, Cox, or Prenax. Representatives of these member institutions are encouraged to contact APT to ensure we have an email address on file so the client can receive Communiqué.

  • Life Membership

    Life members are individuals who pay once ($6,250) and enjoy all Individual APT member benefits in perpetuity. Their names are also listed in the APT Bulletin

  • Global Membership Program

    APT is committed to exchanging knowledge and creating community throughout the globe. 


    Recognizing that annual membership dues paid in USD can be an obstacle to membership, in May 2026, the Board of Directors adopted a membership discount program based on the World Bank's classification of income by country.  Learn more below.
